Three Simple Details for the Perfect Photoshoot

Girl, I hear ya – you want drop dead gorgeous senior photos but planning your photoshoot feels soooo overwhelming! I’m here to tell you that it’s far easier than you think when we focus on these three details: wardrobe, location, and accessories.

Let’s dive on in!

Wardrobe

Ahhhh…shopping. Ain’t it fun?

If you’re anything like me, you love the idea of shopping but when the time comes to hit your favorite stores the task quickly becomes a daunting one.

The key to avoiding the stress is planning ahead. 🙂 Think of what your “perfect” outfits would be and use those as a baseline for shopping (hello Pinterest board).

Here’s my tips for making outfit shopping a breeze:

-Choose colors that flatter your hair color, skin tone, and eyes.

-Wear outfits that compliment your body shape (not too tight or too loose).

-Variety is key. Most seniors opt for two casual outfits and two more formal ones. We don’t want every outfit looking the same, instead choose a variety of colors, styles, textures, and patterns.

Some of my favorite stores include Altar’d State, Express, Freepeople, and Brandy Melville.

Location

Where your photos are taken says just as much about your photoshoot as your wardrobe does. Location sets the tone and ultimately ties all of the details together. This is why I never choose a location until I have personally seen my senior’s wardrobe and accessories. I want to know what client’s style is like so that I can choose a location to compliment the looks -not the other way around.

Going for an edgy, editorial vibe? Think “big city”-colorful walls, parking ramps, and leading lines like alleyways. Thinking you might want a more “earthy” and “bohemian” look? Explore an open field, wildflowers, or even a beach.

Urban vs. Nature Locations

Try not to overthink when it comes to location. The best photographers can take one location and create an endless number of looks.

Accessories

Accessories are the cherry on top of the epic photoshoot sundae! Think shoes, jewelry, hats, belts, jackets, and props.

The easiest way to transform an “okay” outfit into a stellar one lies in the accessories.

For example, Amanda wore a simple tan sweater with a green mini skirt, but she added a large hat and statement belt to take it to the next level.

Maddy is a musician and incorporated her cello into her shoot. The outfit was simple, a black jumpsuit, but by adding in something she is passionate about (the cello) her shoot quickly leveled up.

Last, we have Kaylee who added a pop of red to her black and white polka-dot jumpsuit. Statement shoes are an easy, sure fire way to crush your look.
